Blog Action Day 2008

Today is Blog Action Day and the topic is Poverty. There are many brilliant ideas submitted concerning this issue.
My favorite way to assist in the fight against poverty is to donate to the The Heifer Project. The concept is that you are donating live animals and the community takes care of them and their offspring are shared with someone else. Generally these are animals that provide a food source rather than being eaten. Goats, sheep, chickens and heifers can be "donated". It is very cool.

I have also volunteered at food kitchens both in the US and overseas. It is a very humbling experience. Especially if you think you are "poor", chances are you ain't seen nothin' yet! until you've stood beside someone who is truly financially poor - funny thing is, often they are emotionally rich! There is a lot to be learned from those we consider less fortunate than us.

Great post, Melissa! I like Heifer, too - and they serve poor communities here in the US as well as abroad!
